Best international restaurants in Krabi

Krabi's western food is almost as good as the scenery

Krabi is in a prime position on Thailand’s western Andaman Sea coastline to enjoy fresh seafood dishes flavoured with the range of herbs unique to Thai cooking. Foodies are able to sample crab, tiger prawns, fish and squid created in a style that only the finest Thai chefs know how to do.

Over the past quarter of a century, Krabi has grown in popularity as a holiday destination. There has been a corresponding increase in dining options to cope with the growth in visitor numbers. In recent years, international dining in Krabi meant a tuna sandwich or spaghetti made with a Thai-style sauce.

Nowadays, holidaymakers in Krabi can choose from a cosmopolitan selection of restaurants. Succulent steaks, traditional Italian pizzas, bangers and mash, wiener schnitzel, Swedish meatballs, Tex-Mex food and Indian curries can all be found at eateries in Krabi.

As many of Krabi’s accommodation establishments are concentrated in the environs of the ever-popular Ao Nang Beach, this is where most of the best international restaurants are also located. There is a smattering of choices in Krabi Town as well as other tourist hubs including Railay and Klong Muang Beach.

In Ao Nang, international dining options are diverse and range from the omnipresent fast food outlets of McDonald's and Burger King through to the aptly named Carnivore where foodies can dine on some of the finest steaks and grilled meats currently available in the Andaman region of Thailand.

Since its 2003 opening, Carnivore has evolved into one of the must-visit dining options in Ao Nang. As well as steaks, the restaurant menu includes the chef’s specialty grilled sea-prawns in a garlic cream sauce as well as soups, tuna steaks, filleted white snapper and an assortment of gourmet baguettes. Carnivore boasts a full wine list and imported bottled beers from Belgium and the Netherlands. Carnivore is on Thanon Klong Heng, across from the Thai Village Resort.

People with a fondness for Italian pasta, pizzas and ice-cream will discover there are several establishments that serve these popular items in Ao Nang. Azzurra is an Italian-managed ristorante close to the sea front that comes highly recommended for its pasta dishes, tiramisu and cocktails. La Luna is also near the beach and offers great views. Authentic thin-crust pizzas, bruschetta and spaghetti are among the specialities here.

The Irish Rover is a traditional pub set back from the beach in which diners and drinkers can relax in a civilised atmosphere. The menu here is a cosmopolitan creation including ploughman’s lunches, beans on toast, chilli con carne, bhajis, and fish and chips among the many eclectic options. The excellent choice of beverages includes draught Guinness.

The Blue Mango Restaurant & Bar is on Beach Road and although the speciality here is something known as a plank steak, seafood and vegetarian dishes also feature prominently. A plank steak is a Swedish style sirloin served on an importe../../articles/d_oak_board_garnished_with_B_eacute.css;arnaise sauce, asparagus and duchess potatoes.

Diver's Inn is on the beach approach road and is the place to head for a meat fix. This German-themed restaurant has garnered rave reviews for the quality of its surf & turf, steak, lamb and duck dishes that are served with mouth-watering sauces. German wheat beers and Swedish cider provide the perfect accompaniment to a meal here.

Other options for delicious international meals at Ao Nang include Tandoori Nights for Indian cuisine, Crazy Gringos for Tex-Mex and the Last Fisherman bar for day-time salad buffets and evening barbecues on the beach. There is also an outlet of Subway for sandwiches as well as Swensen's for ice cream.

Although Krabi Town is primarily geared towards seafood and Thai cuisine, two long-term eateries cater to foreign visitors pining for a taste of home. Viva Pizzeria on Prudsa Uthit Road serves up tasty pizzas, steaks, pastas and other Italian gems, while perennial favourite May & Mark is still going strong. May & Mark is located just off Maharat Road and has an eclectic menu with gourmet sandwiches and Mexican dishes.

There are several good dining options at Klong Muang Beach. The Malati Indian Restaurant is one of several eateries at the Sheraton Krabi Beach Resort. Beachside dining and the tantalising flavours of Indian curries, breads, rice and snacks ensure the Malati remains a popular choice.

Paddy’s pub at Klong Muang is the sister establishment of the Irish Rover in Ao Nang. This venue has a relaxing ambience and a beachside beer garden. The same range of draught and bottled beers, including Kilkenny and Victoria Bitter, as well as food such as homemade pies and tacos are served here.

Restaurants at Railay Beach are mostly attached to its resorts and hotels. The Sunrise Tropical Resort’s restaurant serves a varied selection of Thai and international dishes. The dining outlet at the Rayavadee Hotel also has international dishes such as rack of lamb and steak on its menu. The Last Bar serves both Indian food and pizzas.
