Krabi digs; cheap and cheerful places to stay

There are plenty of affordable places in Krabi

There are plenty of affordable places in Krabi

By Dave Rudd

Krabi is one of Thailand’s hotspots, with its pretty beaches, myriad islands, and towering limestone cliffs, yet it is laid back and is a lot less crowded than nearby Phuket. Krabi is also a lot cheaper than Phuket, featuring better priced hotels, entertainment, and food and drink.

Digs range from budget guest houses in Krabi Town up to five-star luxury at the main beaches of Ao Nang and Rai Leh, plus a whole range of moderate hotels in between.

Ao Nang is the main place to be based in Krabi. It is about 20 minutes by road from Krabi Town and the main activity base for the region, having the largest collection of hotels, shops, restaurants, and bars. The beach here is nice and is used for transporting visitors to and from other beaches in the area.

Contact details for all these available on our main bungalows and guesthouses page.

Ao Nang Hotels

The most developed beach in Krabi is lined with palms and shops, and also has a large supply of hotels, resorts, and guest houses. If you’re looking for cheap digs in Krabi, then Ao Nang is the best place to look as there is a glut of them behind the beach.

Ao Nang Orchid Bungalows: located in Moo 2, this is one of the best budget options in Krabi, featuring newly renovated rooms as well as air-conditioned garden bungalows. The beach is only a five-minute walk away.

Ao Nang Village Bungalows: this similarly-priced place to Orchid Bungalows also has rooms in a garden setting and at a comparable price.

Baanlay Bungalow: perfect for backpackers, this new-style resort has both fan and air-conditioned bungalows and is one of the best priced for this category in the region.

The Vogue Resort & Spa: this place is distinctly one up from the budget type guest houses, with its hillside garden setting and deluxe rooms. It is perfect for those after a slice of nature, is near to the beach and comes with 80 large rooms, including 56 deluxe and 24 honeymoon suites.

Nadivana Serviced Apartments: featuring quality short- and long-term apartments, Nadivana has fine rooms that feature high ceilings and large windows. One-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments are on hand, as well as penthouse apartments, and there are swimming pools, Jacuzzis, a bar and a restaurant onsite.

Railay Hotels

Rai Leh is best for those who prefer a quieter stay while in Krabi. It is the rock climbing capital of Thailand and has that distinctive double beach look from above, with two strips of sand separated by a couple hundred metres of land. Couples and families will be happiest here, while backpackers should head for Rai Leh East or better still, stick to Ao Nang where the cheaper digs are.

Cabana Bungalows: this is the cheapest accommodation on Rai Leh, with bamboo bungalows in the Rai Leh East part of the area. Prices can be dirt cheap here in the low season but go up dramatically in-season.

Rai Leh Village Hotel: reasonably-priced concrete bungalows in Rai Leh West that each come with fan or air conditioning and a private bathroom. They are set back off the beach in a garden setting.

Krabi Town Hotels

Not many visitors stay in Krabi Town and those that do typically only do so for a night or two. It is nowhere near the beach and is fairly unremarkable in its make up, being a typical Thai town. There are some decent budget and mid-range hotels in Krabi Town, although little of significance in the upper end.

Swallow Guesthouse: a decent budget option in Krabi Town on Maharaj, Soi 4, Swallow has been here for ages and is right in the town centre within reach of shopping and markets. Rooms are fan-only but super-clean and super-cheap, as hotels should be in Thailand.

Chan Cha Lay Hotel: another Krabi Town budget option on Uttarakit Road. It is centrally situated and comes with friendly staff and the option of room with or without bath, depending on your budget. There are also air-conditioned rooms available.

Good Dream Guesthouse: also located on Uttarakit Road, the aptly named Good Dream is the cheapest, decent guesthouse in town. All rooms come with hot water and there is also wireless internet onsite.

City Hotel: a decent mid-range hotel on Sukon Road in Krabi Town, it comes with double rooms equipped with fan or air conditioning. Rooms also have hot water shower and cable TV.

Diamond Private Resort: this resort is one of the nicest in Krabi Town. It is actually located just outside town in a nice spot overlooking the sea and has a stunning garden setting, with a beautiful swimming pool and stylish accommodation. Rooms are sensibly priced given the setting.

Other Krabi hotels

There are also many hotels outside of the main beach areas and Krabi Town that offer as good accommodation and at tamer prices than any beach in the region.

Phanom Bencha Mountain Resort: a garden resort 15 minutes from downtown Krabi and also within reach of Krabi Airport. It comes with single and double bungalows – the latter able to sleep four people – and has a natural swimming pool and good trekking options in nearby Phanom Bencha National Park.
