13th fun regatta underway at Phang Nga Bay

THE Phang Nga Bay Regatta will commence with a fleet of 50 yachts setting sail in picturesque southern Thailand.

The event will take place in three provinces in southern Thailand including Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi, making it one of the most scenic regattas on the rapidly growing Asian sailing calendar.

Known as a ‘fun regatta’, skippers and crew from all across the globe will compete for honours in six classes such as racing, cruising, bareboat charter, firefly and multihull. Entrants come from New Zealand, the UK, Australia, Canada, Austria, the US, France, Russia and Thailand.

Unlike most other regattas held in Thailand, the fleet races to a different location each night, as most regattas return to the same place at the end of the racing day.

The Phang Nga Regatta, now in its 13th year, began with registration and the opening party at the Absolute Chandara Resort and Spa at Ao Po, in the north of Phuket.

The first day of the race departs from Ao Po as the fleet races to the top of the scenic Phang Nga Bay, and out past James Bond Island, ending the day at one of the region’s renowed restaurants, Laem Sak Seafood at Chong Lat.

The second day of the race sees the fleet heading past many of the secluded islands that are located in the south of Thailand, finishing the day at the luxurious Ko Yao Noi Paradise Resort before heading to Krabi on February 6th.

The race ends on the 7th as the fleet heads back to Phang Nga Bay for the closing party.
