Trouble flares as Thaksin assets seized

Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has had more than half his 76.6 billion baht of frozen assets seized as angry red shirt supporters ran amok and torched a building in protest.

The fugitive politician will be allowed to retain 30.24 billion baht by the Supreme Court but still claimed the decision was “unfair”.

The cash had been frozen by the Thai government ever since a military coup took place in September 2006.

But the court ruled “to seize all the money would be unfair since some of it was made before Thaksin became prime minister”.

Thaksin apologised to his family for the distress they had suffered and confessed his ex-wife had always advised him against getting involved in politics.

Red shirt supporters of Thaksin were thought to be responsible for setting fire to a joss house near the court building after verdict was announced.

Thaksin is currently in the UAE but faces corruption charges should he ever return to Thailand.
