THE Krabi coastline has been named top of the ‘five best treasures in southern Thailand’ by a prestigious travel publication.
Arrivals Travel said that touring the mysterious and incredible hongs by boat is the pinnacle of travel and advised its readers to visit the area.
Hongs are collapsed cave systems found within the sheer limestone cliffs of the islands by the dramatic emerald-green Andaman sea.
These days they form picturesque lagoons and have been used in many feature films such as James Bond: the Man with the Golden Gun starring Roger Moore.
These island Hongs are scattered throughout Krabi Province and Phang Nga Bay but can only be reached during low tide by longtail boat or sea kayak.
Every hong has its own distinct ecosystem of flora and fauna, such as birds, monkeys and fish.
The other four finalists in the Southern Thailand Treasures category in order were spicy cooking courses, jungle trekking in Khao Lak, snorkelling off Koh Lanta and the bustle of Bangkok.
