Weapons theft causes red shirt rally fears

A “MASSIVE loss of weapons and explosives” from a Thai army base near Krabi has prompted a government investigation.

A large amount of explosives plus around 6,000 assault rifles were taken from Engineering Regiment 401 in Phatthalung Province, officials discovered on Tuesday.

Investigators are now trying to determine if the deadly stockpile has fallen into hands of militant red shirts or insurgents in the extreme south of the Kingdom.

The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) plan to hold a million man march commencing on Friday in order to oust the government.

An army spokesman revealed the investigation would focus on the whether the theft was “an inside job” and claimed that security at army arsenals such as in the capital had since been tightened.

UDD spokesman Sean Boonpracong said protesters arriving in Bangkok on March 12 have been advised not to bring weapons and that the organisation’s own security officers will be checking for weapons to ensure there is no trouble at the rally.
