Divers required for Koh Hei island clean up

10 Oct 2011

Southern Thai authorities have requested divers interested in taking part in cleaning up an Andaman Sea dive site to contact them. Coral Island (Koh Hei) is between the two resort districts of Krabi and Phuket Island and will be the focus of the activities later this month.

The three days of activities will begin on 28 October with a seminar themed around sustainable tourism. Divers will head for Koh Hei the next day where they will help with coral cleaning and getting rid of flotsam and jetsam. Dumped fishing nets are a major problem when they get wrapped around the fragile coral reefs.

The event will wind up on October 30 with a trade show at the premises of the Phuket Aquarium where local dive companies will showcase their tours and products.

The dive is being jointly organised by the Thailand Diving Association (TDA), the Tourism Authority of Thailand and Phuket Marine Biological Centre. People who wish to take part need to have open-water dive certification and register with the TDA as a three man crew.

The TDA says it would like a total of 50 divers to help with the cleaning operation. The final day of registration for diving is today, but it is always worth checking to see if there are any vacancies.

The TDA can be contacted at tda-thailand@hotmail.com or by phoning 076 417063.
