Bay Regatta dates announced

The organisers of the popular Krabi region Bay Regatta have announced that it will take place at the beginning of next month. Due to the magnificent backdrop of Phang Nga Bay, the annual yachting extravaganza is a major draw for boating enthusiasts and spectators alike.

The 2012 regatta is the 15th in the series and has proved so popular over the years that many of the yachts and crews who have taken part return time and again. While many of the entrants represent Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines, there are also vessels from the UK, the US, Canada and Russia.

Race organisers Ao Chalong Yacht Club say they expect between 40 and 50 crews to compete for honours in races held from 1 to 5 February 2012. The different race categories are Cruising A and B, Racing, Multi-hull and Bareboat Charter.

This year’s event will see yachts follow a diverse course after an opening ceremony and party at Koh Maphrao’s Village Coconut Island. Sailors will then head for Koh Yao Noi with racing continuing on the second and third days around Krabi’s breathtaking limestone karsts.

The last day will see yachts head across Phang Nga Bay towards the south end of Phuket and the home base of Ao Chalong Yacht Club. Awards and prize giving ceremonies will take place here as well as the end-of-regatta party.

Abundant sponsors of the 2012 Bay Regatta include Sheraton Krabi Beach Resort and Phuket International Hospital, while official suppliers number Nautica and Lee Marine among their ranks.
