Lifeguards to use jet-skis

At Karon Beach in Phuket this week, a team of Thai and Australian lifeguard instructors demonstrated that jet-skis can be instrumental in saving lives.

At the demonstration, the team, led by Australian David Field, held a mock surf rescue operation. The event showed that lifeguards on jet-skis can reach swimmers in difficulties, much more quickly than they can on paddle boards.

Mr Field, with the Australian Surf Life Saving Association, told the Phuket Gazette that jet-skis carrying a sled board are a useful tool for rescuing people quickly.

TAT invites applications for travel awards

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced this week that it is now accepting applications for the eighth biannual chapter of the Thailand Tourism Awards.

A hundred and one awards are up for grabs, with entries divided into five categories of attractive tourist destinations; health tourism, tourist accommodations; tour packages and tourism support.

Several subdivisions within the five main categories narrow the stakes down according to criteria like culture, historic importance, nature, community projects, etc.

For hotels, divisions spell out sub-categories for city hotels, resorts, boutique hotels, convention venues and pool villa amenities.

TAT has advised all interested applicants to send in their nominations by the 15th of January, 2010. Both Thai-owned and foreign-owned tourism businesses are welcome to apply, officials have clarified.

Krabi took several gongs for various categories last year, and along with Phuket and Phang Nga, is expected to out in a good showing for this year as well.

While Phuket is the major tourism-income generator for Thailand—after the capital, Bangkok—Krabi is also recognized as a significant tourist-magnet, attracting 2.6 million tourists annually. Phuket attracts around 5.3 million visitors every year.

TAT’s tourism award winners stand to gain considerable media coverage and exposure, with the awards announced in major publications like the TAT’s own Osotho magazine.

Applicants are advised to call 02-250550 (ext 4495 or 4498) or fax 02-2537431 or or email: spdiv@tat.or.th for more information.
